Two tips for those who want to have their house exterior painted

If you intend to hire a professional painter to repaint your house's exterior, here are two tips that should ensure that the process goes as smoothly as possible.

Move all obstructions out of the way

Before the painter arrives, you should spend an hour or so removing any items that are located close to the exterior walls of your house.

Examples of items that might need to be moved include patio furniture, gardening tools, barbecue equipment, outdoor toys (such as trampolines and portable swing sets) and shrubs (these can be pulled out of the soil, kept in a plant pot for the duration of the painting process and then replanted after it is finished).

There are several reasons why it is important to move these items away from the walls that need to be painted.

Firstly, it will speed up the painting process, as your painter will not have to waste their time moving these things out of the way so that they can gain access to and paint the sections of wall that these items are blocking.

Secondly, it will reduce the likelihood of the painter sustaining an injury during the course of their work. If for example, you leave a pair of sharp gardening shears lying on the ground next to one of the exterior walls, and the painter loses their footing and falls from their ladder, they could land on the shears and cut their arms or legs.

Thirdly, moving your belongings out of the way will eliminate the possibility of them being damaged; there will be no risk of paint splattering all over your patio furniture or of paint thinner being split on your barbecue equipment.

Check the weather forecast before booking a painter

Before you choose a specific date for your house exterior to be painted, it's important to check the weather forecast.

The reason for this is as follows; if your painter paints your home on a wet, windy day, two problems could arise.

Firstly, it could be very dangerous for the painter to work in these conditions. Standing on a ladder during a bout of windy weather, for example, could easily lead to them falling off and sustaining a serious injury.

As such, if the winds become too strong whilst they are working, they may need to stop midway through the process, and finish off the job on a different day when the weather has improved and it is safe for them to continue painting. This could leave you stuck with a half-painted house for several days.

Secondly, rain may affect the end results of the painting process. Even the most skilled of professional painters may not be able to achieve a smooth, even finish if they are forced to paint during a period of heavy rain, as the rainwater will mix with the wet paint and affect its texture.

As such, it is best to arrange for your house exterior to be painted on a day when the weather expected to be dry, sunny and calm.
