Three Tips To Reduce Paint Fumes During Office Renovations

Posted on: 30 July 2020

One of the fastest ways to brighten up an office is to hire a commercial painting service to give it a fresh coat of paint. It is amazing how one coat of white paint adds light and brightness to any room. However, you must consider the impact of paint fumes on your employees before the office is painted because you do not want your renovating endeavours to make them feel ill. There are several ways you can reduce the impact of paint fumes during office renovations, so consider these three tips before the project begins.

VOC Paint

Volatile organic compounds, or VOCs, are the chemicals within the paint which give off smelly fumes. When these fumes build up in an enclosed area, such as an office, they create headaches and nausea, among other things. Therefore, you must confirm with your commercial painter that they will be using a low- or no-VOC paint. These types of paint have few or no volatile organic compounds, which means the fume issue is removed. Minimal VOC paints have evolved to a point where they give coverage just as well as full-VOC paints and they dry as quickly as their counterparts, so there is no real reason not to use them.

Water Buckets Or Charcoal

Once you have discussed VOC paints with your painter, there are a couple of other tricks you can use on painting day to help ensure any painting fumes are quickly absorbed. One of these tricks involves placing small buckets of water around the office. Water absorbs the paint odour and can be tipped out at the end of the day without effort, so this is a simple odour absorption method to use.

Charcoal is another great odour absorber. Purchase bags of charcoal BBQ briquettes (the ones without lighter fluid added) and crush these up into small pieces. These can also be placed in buckets around the office and then thrown out at the end of the day.

Painting Timing

Another tip to reduce the impact of paint fumes on your employees is to consider the timing of the task. Commercial painters are aware of their impact on the office environment, so they often have flexibility regarding the day and time of the painting task. It is worth discussing with them if there is an option to paint the office after-hours or during the weekend.

A commercial painter takes the hard work out of brightening up your office, and by using these tips, you can ensure your staff are not affected by paint fumes while this process takes place.
